Winter view of Valassina

Our hotel is placed in Canzo, the country which, together with Asso, represents the entry door in a peaceful and easeful world, in which the time seems stopped: the Valassina. Valassina is the valley within which the first Lambro river part runs and is placed in the Triangolo Lariano, in province of Como. The most important country, which the name "Valassina" comes from, is Asso. The beginning of the valley, as like as the end of Brianza, is marked by the waterfall of Vallategna.

We can say that Valassina is the heart of the Triangolo Lariano, that is the portion of earth included among the two branch of the Lake of Como ( also called "Lario", from which the name of Triangolo Lariano). His territory is included in the mountain community of the Triangolo Lariano.

The sanctuary of the "Madonna of Ghisallo"

Asso and Canzo built-up areas are surrounded by the embrace of several pre-alpine mountains, among which the characteristic "Corni of Canzo".

If you run along the valley, near his culminating point, on the road to Bellagio, you’ll meet the built-up area of Magreglio, where the sanctuary of the Madonna Of Ghisallo and the new museum of cycling are placed.

From Magreglio it is possible to go on for Bellagio, the "pearl of Lario", placed on a peninsula, at the center of The Lake of Como, or you can keep on rising towards the locality called “Piano Rancio” and “Mount S. Primo”. In this last resort it is also possible to ski in winter and in every season it is possible to observe one of the most striking sights of Lario.

In the resort called “Piano Rancio”, instead, it is possible to visit the source of Lambro river. It lies hidden in a thick pinewood and is called "Menaresta", probably due to the discontinuous water flow which springs and which disappears and reappears with a short underground course section. Then the river throws itself down to the built-up of Barni and goes on along Valassina, creating striking corners, like as the ravine of “Ponte Oscuro” in Asso. The name “Ponte Oscuro” (that can be translated as “Obscure Bridge”) derives from the bridge that crosses Lambro to an about 10 meters height, not far from the ex hospital and from the old spinning mill. The ravine is so striking that also Stendhal remembered it in his diary “Viaggio in Italia”. Lambro river then enters the Lake of Pusiano, from which it goes on in his run which will take him until the Pianura Padana, where it throws itself into the Po river.

Among the natural beauties produced by water in our area we remember also the Lake Of Segrino, placed to the entrance of Valassina, at few hundreds of meters from our hotel. The lake, totally hugged by mountains, offers the possibility of a naturalistic road that runs all around its shores.

The countries Sormano, Rezzago, Caglio, Lasnigo and Civenna are also placed in Valassina not far from our hotel and surrounded by the mountains of the Triangolo Lariano, in a landscape of woods and pastures. In the built-up of Rezzago it is possible to visit the Church of Ss. Cosma and Damiano: the most immediate feature is the Romanesque bell tower. In the Church it is possible to find frescos of 1543. The architecture is compareable with the other not far S. Alessandro Church in Lasnigo and S. Margherita Church, near Faggeto Lario. In Rezzago it is also possible to visit the famous and characteristic “Funghi D’Argilla” (that we can translate as “clay mushrooms”), curious natural sculptures modelled in the years by the weather.

In Caglio, in an alpine environment harmonically cut out between the access streets, is possible to find another characteristic church, marked by its beautiful architectural lines and bell tower, with pleasant glass windows of the century XX. Going on in the woods beyond Caglio a comfortable carriageable road leads to a wide car park near the sanctuary of “S. Maria di Campoé”. The landscape that sorruonds this resorts inspired also the painter Giovanni Segantini.

In Lasnigo, along the main street, it is possible to admire the Church of S. Alessandro which, with his impressive Romanesque bell tower, lies on a raised hill in the middle of the valley, preceded and surrounded by a Via Crucis. This church seems to dominate the valley, just like a castle.

Civenna is beyond Magreglio, in the first section of the road called Ghisallo, towards Bellagio. If you pass through Civenna it is recommended to stop to admire the fabulous view on the Lake of Como from the forecourt of S.Rocco, where the monument to the motor-cycling fallen and the little Church of S. Rocco are placed, characterized by its baroque lines.

Sormano is famous for the legendary slope called "Muro of Sormano" (that can be translated as “Wall of Sormano”) because of its important slopes. In the 60s Such slope has been also inserted by Vincenzo Torriani in the “Giro di Lombardia”, a very popular bicycle race, and has became legendary for his hardness, which has forced many champions of the bike to get off their bikes and go on by foot.

Today the slope is closed to the traffic, and was recently reasphalted, so that it is practicable without problems (apart from the slope difficulty!) with any bike. On the top it is possible to reach the pass called "Colma di Sormano". From here, turning on the left, it is possible to go down to the resort called “Piani Of Tivano” and then to Nesso, on the western branch of Lario. Turning on the right, instead, it is possible to go back to Asso, covering a road opened to the traffic and with slopes sweeter than the Muro di Sormano’s ones.

At last we'd like to underline that the Valassina ed the Triangolo Lariano are in the middle of the two branch of the Como Lake whose shores, with agreant towns, rich and ancient villas and pleasant sights, can be easily reached in a short time.

In conclusion, our Hotel is a very good starting point for the tourism at 360 degrees, both for who loves mountains and for who wants to have naturalistic walks and for who wants to enjoy the Como Lake pleasant sights. Our area offers the right mixture of water and earth, with a lot of rivers which enter or leave not only the Como Lake, but also the other less famous and smaller, but not less beautiful, lakes: the Lake of Annone and Oggiono, the Lake of Montorfano, the Lake of Alserio and the above-mentioned Lake of Segrino.
